- Misfortune at the Farm, pt 1 -

With the near-promise of fighting Ravenclan in the near future—there was an additional aire of excitement and tension among Fireclan. Warriors and their apprentices alike trained harder than usual, coming back bruised, cut, and exhausted at the end of each day... only to repeat the process once more the next. The morning after the ceremony in Fireclan proved to be more relaxed than usual, with a number of apprentices being allowed to sleep in and spend leisure time around the camp.

Unfortunately, idle paws were the workers of the dark forest; before long, a particularly antagonistic figure (Rookpaw Aria ) had set their sights on Beechpaw (Bern ), an anxious little tom cat.

Inside of the apprentices den, very few of the suns rays manage to filter through the overhanging branches... the atmosphere is alight with conspiratorial feelings and mischief... along with fear and frustration.

It is only the beginning for the group.

Why him?
He could feel Rookpaw's gaze bore into the back of his head. He had caught her staring at him and as he tried to avoid conflict, he had turned his head away. His own golden eyes were round and wide as an owl's, flicking from side to side nervously as he searched for any of his siblings and tried to supress the nervous twitch of his head.
Atleast one of those attempts were in vain as his foster-siblings all seemed to have left the den. He had thought he felt colder this morning without Hazelpaw's fluffy pelt brushing his own short one. He could see no signs of Maplepaw or Briarpaw or even Cinderpaw either.
He bent his rather large ears (atleast large in comparison to his slim head and face) backwards in order to pick up should Rookpaw get closer and let her temper out on him.
Beechpaw was aware that, eventhough he and the large brown molly were both oriental built, his appearance had some rather obvious short-comings. He was tall, yet slim so that he looked way smaller than anyone else laying down. His tail was too short for his size, his whiskers also lacked practical length and his claws were only tiny needles. He also had feminine hips which had caused some cats confusion about his gender already.
To make it short: Despite his fur colour he did not look at all like a FireClan warrior.
Not at all like any FireClan warrior.
The ginger tabby pressed his ears closer to his head and tried to make himself look even smaller, less attention-worthy.
In the past moons he had tried to avoid Rookpaw as good as possible. He had seen her have a go at Gustpaw, making snide remarks that he didn't know how he himself would have dealt with. Sure, he had managed to intervene and this had boosted his confidence back then, but ever since his foster-father had died and the RavenClan-situation had started, his confidence had drooped low to the ground.
It wasn't that he didn't want to learn how to fight, he just didn't feel comfortable in the way his senior mentor Heavybear taught it to him. The way she wanted him to move felt unnatural to him. He wished he were good at the traditional FireClan-style, but he just wasn't.
And this had given him the reputation of a screw-up.
He hated it.

Rookpaw * The Hero * To Rise

Rookpaw had the great idea to spend her time and to prove who was top dog around here. Fireclanners were known to tease the dogs at the barn. To see who would chicken out and run away like a coward. Some of this apprentices did need to get a grip and grow up. Scorchpaw was one prime example of wasted potential. Even Coyotepaw has more of a backbone than her. She was the only one with the brains around here so it would up to her to mold her until something that Fireclanners can be proud of.  Maybe...yes taking her and few others to the barn would great. She would able to test the bravery in action and they would be able to see just who pathetic she really is. What did Aspsenstar see in her? She is something would never understand. She looked around to see Beechpaw nearby.

"Hey, you!" She growled maliciously, "Get over here now unless you want a beatdown." You'll be the first I mold today.  "Follow me. We're going to barn whether you like it or not. Just as soon as we more apprentices to join." Her eyes narrowed as wasn't five seconds off him if he wanted to protest. I dare you to talk back like you before. Gustpaw is not here to save you from my wraith. 

She walked deeper inside the apprentice's den for more victims-members to join the fray. She came across Blazepaw and Rainpaw lying next to other. She hated that half-clan filth. He made her sick, she would kick out of Fireclan if she had a choice. Pure-blood is the best their ever will be. "Blazepaw and Rainpaw enough snuggling and get over here. Do that one you own time, not me. Unless you want to miss a chance to prove your worth to Fireclan. Being a kit to a leader or apprentice to one does not count." Your mother had already done a great sin with she chose Mistypaw. 

The brown she-cat felt inside ready to burst as noticed Coyotepaw and Scorchpaw coming in the den. Almost immediately a look of disgust washed onto her. She glared right into Scorchpaw's eyes. You. "Just the two cats I wanted to see. Come join us." Like I am giving you a choice in the matter. A wolfish grin crept up on her face. She waited for everyone to gather before finally, speak. "I have an idea to test everyone. To see who has the courage and or who are cowards. We're to the barn and mess with dogs. Those mouse-brain howlers."

It was a lazy sort of day – though he knew Aspenstar would have something to say if she caught him lazing around and half-napping next to Rainpaw, Blazepaw couldn’t bring himself to stir. The orange-and-white tom had found a certain peace in the transition from leaf-bare to newleaf. Surviving the coldest season had seemed impossible at times, between the sickness that shook the Clan and the battle fought over the lake, but all of Fireclan’s hard work had paid off. They had come back from things and would surely grow stronger than before. Even the threat of battle couldn’t ruin Blazepaw’s good spirits. Whatever came, Fireclan would be ready.

Other apprentices, however, were not as keen to let the peace last.

The apprentice had been dozing lightly, face inadvertently nestled against Rainpaw’s flank as he slept. But a sharp, insufferable voice suddenly broke the relative quiet in the den – Blazepaw’s orange-tipped ears twitched irritably as, even half-asleep, he recognized Rookpaw’s tone. She was Fogstone’s apprentice, and never quite seemed capable of shutting up about it. Blazepaw liked to give his denmates the benefit of the doubt, but Rookpaw had been nothing but rude or mean to him since she’d been apprenticed – and, to his anger, she’d been even worse to Rainpaw.

A lot of cats tease Rainpaw, but they don’t know what he’s really like. If they actually got to know him, they’d love being friends with him.

But Rainpaw was not the target of Rookpaw’s ire – not yet, at least. Instead, her sharp words seemed directed towards another apprentice that Blazepaw wasn’t completely familiar with. Beechpaw seemed like a perfectly-harmless cat, however – if not a little jumpy –and, though Blazepaw couldn’t quite call him a friend, he felt a familiar surge of anger as he heard Rookpaw threaten the tom. As sleepy as he was, he couldn’t take Rookpaw’s rudeness without trying to say something.

”She needs to get over herself,” he half-grumbled, dimly aware that Rainpaw’s fur was in his mouth and muffling his words as he drew more awake. That’s… probably weird. I hope he doesn’t mind. But Rookpaw wasn’t content with simply berating Beechpaw on that particular day. Blazepaw’s ears pricked sharply as he heard his own name along with Rainpaw’s, and he sat bolt upright at the choice of words Rookpaw used.

”We weren’t ‘snuggling’!” he protested, trying to ignore the burning in his pelt as he scrambled to his paws. ”I was just napping!’ While curled up against Rainpaw, with my face pushed into his fur. … Accidental snuggling doesn’t count. Scowling, he shook his pelt, shooting Rookpaw a glare as the arrogant she-cat continued. ”We’re better Fireclan cats than you’ll ever be – we don’t have to prove anything to you.”

Even as he said that, however, he knew that he couldn’t let the challenge go unanswered. He could say and believe that all he wanted, but if he didn’t see what Rookpaw was blathering about, word would surely get around that he was all talk and no action. And the last thing Blazepaw wanted to be was cowardly.

Shooting a dubious glance at Rainpaw, Blazepaw rolled his eyes dramatically in Rookpaw’s direction, offering a melodramatic sigh before shifting to trudge after the she-cat. He wouldn’t pretend to like her, no matter how much he wanted to impress his denmates (and perhaps Rainpaw as well). He had a suspicion that, though Rainpaw likely enjoyed Rookpaw even less than him, the Bengal tom would be right on Blazepaw’s heels. He hoped for it, even – whatever this ‘challenge’ would be, it would surely be more surmountable with Rainpaw at his side.

The idea was about as mouse-brained as he thought, though Blazepaw would rather eat his own tail than admit that outloud. She would just think I was scared. ”Doesn’t everyone mess with the dogs?” he challenged with a huff, amber eyes narrowing as he stared at Rookpaw. ”I mean, they’re clearly stupid – hardly a big challenge, if we’re all smarter than them.” Despite his talk, however, Blazepaw had never bothered the dogs himself. He’d heard stories of slavering jaws and massive teeth and, despite his bravado, a bit of dread was beginning to flutter in his belly.

No—we can handle it, if she insists. We’ve handled a lot worse, dogs should be no problem.

Coyotepaw

Coyotepaw was dragging his tongue across his whiskers as he padded into the apprentice den with his sister, Scorchpaw. The scent of rabbit was all over him, a pleased, lop-sided grin still faintly present. Good Starclan above, thank you for bringing the rabbits back.

'Just the two cats I wanted to see. Come join us.' Rookpaw addressed Coyotepaw ands Scorchpaw. The large grey apprentice had hoped he would be able to sit in his freshly made nest in order to groom, but it appeared his denmates had other plans. It's just another opportunity to get stronger. Good thing I just ate.

Coyotepaw's tail swished against the den's ground, sweeping aside both dirt and moss. "Dogs, you say? His voice had notes of curiosity and, perhaps, cockiness. His legs were so damn long he could outrun one of those mangy things. He himself had never run dogs, but he was excited to show everyone that he could.

'Be careful, 'yote. You might get disembowelled.'

Coyotepaw shivered.

His dark green eyes turned to appraise Blazepaw. I wonder how disappointed Aspenstar is in him. Hm, scratch that, I'm sure Aspenstar is biased towards all her kin. I mean, come on, she chose Mistypaw. He couldn't help the disgusted grunt that came from him.

"It sounds like you're making up a lot of excuses." Coyotepaw taunted, padding over to Blazepaw and challenging him head-on. "They're 'hardly a big challenge' and yet I have never seen you take part in this activity. Don't tell me you're scared."

I’m gonna be the last one standing

Scorchpaw hummed happily as she walked next to Coyotepaw, a content look on her face. She had just shared a rabbit with her brother, which was something she didn’t have the chance to do very often. “Thanks for sharing lunch with me,” she said with a soft smile as the pair walked back to their nests. She was more then ready to spend time curled up in her nest taking a nap. Training with Cinderstar, while a great honor, was quite hard. The mother to her half siblings expected so much out of her, and if she was honest, she was starting to get a bit tired of it.

The gray tabby had only been in the den for a few heartbeats when Rookpaw spotted her and stared into her eyes. Sighing heavily as she averted her golden eyes from the glare, the she cat was about to mumble something about not caring when Rookpaw mentioned it. Dogs. They were going to taunt dogs. “D-dogs? R-Rookpaw, that’s a-” she cut herself off as she heard Coyotepaw taunt Blazepaw for being scared. ‘Great. Coyotepaw is doing this. I can’t exactly let him go and possibly die alone,’ she thought, tail twitching in annoyance.

“Brilliant, these mouse brains actually think this is a good idea,” Scorchpaw mumbled under her breath as she looked at everyone in the den. There was Beechpaw, herself, Rookpaw, Coyotepaw, and... Blazepaw and Rainpaw. Looking away from the pair, the she cat glanced towards where Hickorypaw’s nest was. She wanted to go and curl up next to him and lament about how stupid their denmates were, but alas, he wasn’t there. Sighing, she looked at Rookpaw with a defeated look. “Okay, fine. I guess we’re going to taunt dogs. When are we leaving?” She asked.

Rainpaw snuggled closer to the fluffy and soft thing at his side, it was warm and smelled nice he really didn’t want to let go. He was snoring softly blissfully unaware of the bickering around him, perhaps it was because he pushed himself so much training but Rainpaw tended to sleep like a fucking rock. It was only when Blazepaw moved that Rainpaw woke up with a start. He got on his paws almost immediately faintly aware that the thing he’d been clinging so hard to was his best friend. Wow, that was probably weird for him… His cheeks warmed up but he did his best to ignore it. Dogs? What? Still more or less asleep Rainpaw only stared at Rookpaw, one of his usual tormentors, with confusion. At Blazepaw’s dubious glance the young slver tom seemed to finally catch on to what was happening. “Oh,” he said rather dumbly frowning, he didn’t want to do whatever it is they wanted to do but he knew his best friend well enough to realize that he more or less had no choice in the matter. I mean, he could stay behind but that would mean leaving Blazepaw to his own devices and he couldn’t just do that. Rainpaw opted for just sighing and shaking his pelt free of left-over moss. “I’d rather we do this quickly if that’s what you want to do,” he looked at Blazepaw, head cocking to the side “though it’s best we be careful.” The last part was a whisper meant only for his friend’s ears.
