Only a few sunrises had passed since the last meeting, but as the sun dawned on the horizon, a voice lifted to break the quiet of the early morning.
“All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather before me for a clan meeting!” A small blue-silver tom crouched on a little jut of stone, his round green eyes shifting as the dens rustled to admit the shapes of his fellow clanmates.
Elders peered out from the safety and comfort of their nests, while the queens wrapped their tail around their kits to keep them from racing into the clearing and the warriors and apprentices jostled each other aside to hear.
Sharing their enthusiasm, Sootpaw shifted excitedly from one paw to the other. It had been a while since RavenClan’s last naming ceremony, but with the Clan buzzing with preparations for the battle, he saw no reason to delay it any longer. The Clan needed more apprentices, just as they needed more warriors; and with the battle looming in the not-so-distant future, they needed them now more than ever.
Waiting until all of RavenClan was fathered, Sootpaw rose to his paws and began to pace the small patch of stone, never taking his eyes off of the crowd. A long time ago, the thought of addressing so many cats had made him feel fearful and nervous—now, however, he felt only a thrill of excitement and a surge of pride as he addressed his fellow warriors.
“As I’m sure you all may know, very soon we will be laying siege on FireClan territory. But if we are to be prepared, we’re going to need more warriors,” Sootpaw began. “So today I would like to take the time for another naming ceremony.”
An excited murmur rippled through the crowd. Sootpaw silenced it with a wave of his tail.
“To begin, I’ll be naming our new apprentices.” He stood up and peered into the crowd. A row of kits had been lined up, each looked over by a proud parent. But it was the three kittypets he sought out first. Unlike the kits which had been born into the Clan, these cats were much older and larger, and it was these kittypets that he beckoned forward first.
“Ollie, Dewberry, and Gabriel, come forward to stand before me.” Once the three kittypets had stepped forwards, he addressed them all in turn, starting first with Ollie.
“Ollie,” he mewed, his voice echoing in the clearing as he turned to meet the pale ginger tabby. “Though before you were a kittypet, today I welcome you as a true warrior of RavenClan, and offer you your new name: Olivepaw. From this moment on you will train as a warrior under the guidance of Palethroat. May StarClan light your path.”
His gaze then turned to Dewberry. The grey-furred she-cat was almost the spitting image of what a RavenClan cat should be. He realized that she would fit in perfect once she’d undergone her training. “Dewberry, today I will grant you with your apprentice name. From this moment on until the day you’ve earned your warrior name, you will be known as Dewpaw, and you will train under Stagsong until you have learned everything that you need to know. May StarClan light your path.”
Then it was Gabriel to which he turned. “Gabriel, today I will also grant you with your apprentice name. From this moment on until the day you’ve earned your warrior name, you will be known as Quickpaw, and you will train under Shadowthroat. May StarClan light your path.”
Sootpaw dipped his head as the kittypets withdrew into the crowd.
Once they were out of sight, he turned his attention onto the remaining kits. “Sorrelkit, Russetkit, and Crowkit, step forward.” The three kits took a tentative step forward, their eyes glistening and betraying their excitement.
Sootpaw purred just looking at them. Long ago he’d been where they were now, giddy and nervous as he anticipated who his mentor would be.
Of course, neither he nor the rest of the Clan would have expected that cat to be Petalflight.
Sighing, he shook his head. Now wasn’t the time to think such sad thoughts.
“Sorrelkit” –he nodded for her to come closer— "You are smart and determined. RavenClan will need more cats with your compassion and kindness if we are to endure the harshness of this leafbare, and I hereby name you Sorrelpaw. Spottedbird will be your mentor, and I hope that you learn everything that you need to from her to become a warrior your clanmates can be proud of.”
“Russetkit,” he motioned with his tail for the scrawny ruddy tom to draw closer. “Few kits have known hardship quite like you have, and though you may not have become an apprentice as soon as you would have liked, I am honored to give you the name of Russetpaw. Riverjay will be your mentor, and I hope that you learn everything that you need to from her to become a warrior your clanmates can be proud of.”
Next, his gaze turned to Crowkit. “Crowkit, you are loyal and diligent in everything that you do. RavenClan could use a cat as attentive as you if we are to overcome the hardships to come, and I hereby name you Crowpaw. Shadowthroat will be your mentor, and I hope that you learn everything that you need to become a warrior your Clanmates can be proud of.”
Once the newly made apprentices had vanished into the crowd to touch noses with their new mentors, Sootpaw’s gaze shifted to the apprentices. “Bearpaw, Poppypaw, and Rabbitpaw, come forward to stand before me.”
The three padded forward, and Sootpaw regarded them thoughtfully.
This was his favorite part of the naming ceremonies—the naming of new warriors—and he always tried his best to come up with the most fitting names for each apprentice.
“Bearpaw you have proven yourself to be a kind and honorable cat, and Robinsplash has informed me that you have worked hard to get where you are today. Because of this, I have decided it is time for you to receive your warrior name. From now on, you will be known as Bearjaw. StarClan honors your spirit, and we welcome you as a warrior of RavenClan."
Sootpaw’s green eyes then met the equally green gaze of Poppypaw. The grey she-cat had become a bit of a clan hero after her escapade with the rats, and she was well-respected for her contribution of catmint after the skirmish with the rats. Out of all the apprentices standing there before him now, her warrior name was one of the most anticipated.
“Poppypaw, no cat can deny that you are a strong and loyal cat. You have shown your prowess in battle after the skirmish with the rats and Cindercloud has informed me that you are hardworking during your training as well. Because of this, I have decided that is is time for you to receive your warrior name. From now on, you will be known as Poppyclaw for your fighting spirit. StarClan honors your dedication to your clanmates, and we welcome you as a warrior of RavenClan.”
And lastly, there was Rabbitpaw. “Rabbitpaw you have proven yourself to be a clever and enthusiastic cat, and Skyleap has informed me that you are diligent in your training. Because of this, I have decided that it is time for you to receive your warrior name. From now on, you will be known as Rabbitear. StarClan honors your compassion, and we welcome you as a warrior of RavenClan.”
With the last of the warriors named, Sootpaw joined his Clan as they shouted everybody’s new names until the crowd grew silent again.
Oh, I almost forgot.
Just as the first few warriors were beginning to disperse, Sootpaw drew them back with his voice yet again.
“Since the battle is only a few days away, I think it would be best that we all work on our battle moves. While it is important that we have prey, we cannot afford to lose this battle, so please, whenever you have the time, practice. That is all.” He dipped his head.
