Riverpaw walked into the forest, and turned to look around him to see whether he was far enough for him to be safe from others knowing that he was sick. The burning sensation in his chest that went up to his throat was irritating him lately, but he wouldn't dare to present himself to other people as if he were sick, not when being sick could be looked down upon as a weakness. Around the camp he would have to contain himself, keeping his sickness hidden from everybody else. He tried his best to clear his throat before speaking, trying to keep his voice calm and smooth. But recently he has taken to not talking unless he had to, knowing that sooner or later the sickness would be way too much to hide in his voice. But he would like to go as far as he could with the hopes that it would blow over with no problems. Even being in the forest alone, he suppressed the urge to cough.

For a couple of seconds, he contemplated on the words his youngest brother Pebblepaw told him before he left. He had been listening to the daily gossip, not being engaged in the conversation but still appearing to be, when his brother approached him. Pebblepaw approached him boldly, ignoring the strange looks from the other cats as well as Riverpaw himself. " I know that your busy and that you don't want to talk to me right now," Pebblepaw said with a nod. " But I just wanted to tell you that I love you." With that, his brother caringly pressed his head against his flank in a brotherly fashion, turned around, and walked away. The whole conversation was weird, unnerving, even for his brother. He knew about his brother's odd behaviors but that seemed exceptionally odd. Riverpaw shook his head and pushed the thought from his mind. He would have to worry about that later, right now he was searching for some prey, but so far he was coming up empty.

The burning in his throat and chest got stronger until he felt that he couldn't contain himself. Looking around once again, he searched the forest for any sign of a cat that could make fun of him, and then he went into a coughing fit. He coughed and coughed and didn't stop for a long time. He knelt down to lick the moisture of the cold icy snow, hoping that the water would sooth his throat.

    Kestrelpaw slipped back into camp, his golden eyes gazing around the clearing, wondering what (if anything) was going on. His long grey pelt was dripping with melted snow and ice. The apprentice had just returned from some exploration of the territory, something that he knew he would have to do until he could see the whole forest in his mind. His ears twitched in response to a distant noise back out in the woods. Kestrelpaw turned and slowly made his way closer to the sound. 

    As he approached, the grey-furred tom realized that it was a cat, coughing. What? Shouldn't that cat be in the medicine cat's den if they're sick? But he knew how hard some cats tried to hide their sickness. He stepped into the open, his eyes landing on a young tom who looked a few moons older than Kestrelpaw. "Hi!" Kestrelpaw meowed in a friendly tone. "Are you okay? What's your name?"

Orange Peel,

Riverpaw released another cough before his ears picked up the noise of pawsteps coming towards him. He turned around in surprise and backed up at who had confronted him. He looked like a young apprentice, just a couple moons younger than him. Panic immediately began to settle in as he looked around for more apprentices. Thankfully, it was just the one. He tried to remember the apprentice and immediately found a name. " Kestrelpaw," he thought to himself with a nod. " Yeah, he was one of the kits that had previously had their ceremony." He also recalled him from when he had given his brother Pebblepaw a rock. He was kind is what he remembered.

" Hello," he said with a nod. " Yeah, just feeling a little under the weather," he admitted with a small smile. He sat down to stable himself. " But it's no big deal, I'll get over it." He sat upright and tucked his tail in-between his paws as he began to lick his chest, a lame attempt to make himself appear well. " My name is Riverpaw," he said with a nod. " Your Kestrelpaw, right? Congratulations for becoming an apprentice." He felt a little dizzy but he suppressed it, not wanting to appear weak in front of the younger apprentice. He hoped he would not tell anyone about this. If word got around that he wasn't feeling well, his status could be in danger. He had to appear well in order for him to look presentable to his clan.

    Kestrelpaw nodded. "Yeah," he meowed quietly. "Thanks." But the apprentice didn't know if he should get too close to Riverpaw, so he took a few steps back. "You are sick, aren't you? Why are you out here?" Kestrelpaw was pretty sure that he knew the answer to that, but the young apprentice only watched Riverpaw, his golden eyes bright. The long-furred tom knew that he was lucky to have not gotten sick, and he wanted to keep it that way for sure. But if Riverpaw hid his greencough, he might not recover as fast as he could.

    Kestrelpaw fidgeted. He wasn't used to sitting still; his whole kithood had been a jumble of games and fun. But now he was an apprentice. Kestrelpaw forced his tail to lie flat, forced his eyes to not wander around the forest like he was used to doing. 

    "Do you want help with anything?" the apprentice said finally. "Are you hungry? I can try to hunt something for you. But I'm not that great at hunting. I could still try if you wanted." His talkative personality was getting the better of him, but he didn't stop. "If you're thirsty, I can get some actual water, so you don't have to lick the snow."

Well, there was no point in lying anymore. The apprentice knew that he was sick, evident by him taking a step back in fear of catching it. Riverpaw didn't see that as a bad thing. He would do the same if he were in his position. He awkwardly looked to the side and hoped that he could trust him. " Maybe a little," he said under his breath. " But my health is improving." He looked back at Kestrelpaw. " As for why I'm out here, well, I just wanted to get some fresh air."

He felt a little guilty for a couple of seconds as he thought about how dangerous he was probably being. This apprentice before him was healthy. What if he refused to go to the medicine den and got others sick. But, yet again, he was also afraid of what the others would say. Would he be teased or accused for being weak? No, he couldn't afford the torment.

Riverpaw opened his mouth to refuse the offer, not wanting to take up this cat's time. However, right when he was about to say no, he felt himself go into another coughing fit. He turned around, not wanting to cough into the apprentice's face. Once he was done, he cleared his throat and looked back at him. As much as he didn't want to, he had to ask. " If you could get me some water, I would be very gracious." He nervously observed him, hoping that he wasn't judging him for looking so awful.

    Kestrelpaw nodded and hurried off. To be honest, he was glad to stay away from the sick Riverpaw, but he might as well try to help if he could. The golden-eyed apprentice made his way to a big oak tree from which he had gathered moss once before, but snow coated its roots. Kestrelpaw set about clearing the snow away from the tree. Hopefully, there was some moss left, even if it was dead from the freezing winter cold.

    To Kestrelpaw's delight, he managed to find a few scraps of it still clinging here and there. Hoping that it would hold some water, the apprentice tore it off and rolled it into a bundle. He padded to a small creek, no more than a tiny trickle of water, and set down his bundle to try to break the ice that coated its surface. He pushed on the side with a firm paw and felt the ice crack under his weight. A moment later, Kestrelpaw had broken a small hole in the surface, just big enough to soak the moss that he was carrying.

    Once all of the moss was dripping wet, Kestrelpaw rolled it up again and scampered back to where Riverpaw was. "Here you go," he tried to  meow, but his voice was muffled by the soaked moss. Kestrelpaw dropped the moss to the ground and tried again. "Here's some water. I tried to get as much as I could, but there wasn't a lot of moss left."

He was grateful that Kestrelpaw walked off to get some moss, giving him enough time to think by himself for a little while. " You mouse-brain, you should see Ashcloud," he though to himself. " But if Hailpaw saw me like this, what would she say. Yet again, if I don't get well soon, I won't be able to talk to Elli." He blushed slightly at that name but pushed his feelings aside, using the excuse that he was sick and was probably overheating and delirious. When Kestrelpaw came back with some moss, he smiled gently and drew the moss in closer to him. " No, this is enough. Thank you." He then drank off it before looking back at Kestrelpaw. 


He had something that he wanted to ask him. " I am very grateful for you helping me. But...would you mind not telling anyone that I was out here today?" he said politely. He didn't want to get in trouble or teased for something as silly as a cold. He would feel better eventually and he didn't want anyone pestering him to visit the medicine den when he could heal on his own. " Please? I would rather not have anyone know."

    Kestrelpaw glanced worriedly at the sick apprentice in front of him. 'Would you mind not telling anyone that I was out here today?' The request was a gentle, friendly one, but Kestrelpaw couldn't push away the feeling of concern for Riverpaw's health. The older apprentice was a good cat, and even though Kestrelpaw wanted to honor his request, the golden-eyed tom didn't want Riverpaw to take his chances with the greencough or whatever illness he had. But . . . Riverpaw did look like a strong cat, a cat that could definitely fight it off.
    
    Kestrelpaw nodded. "I guess, if you don't want me to." The words themselves even sounded strange coming out of his mouth. He was accustomed to helping other cats, doing what would be best for them. And this . . . even though it was what Riverpaw wanted, he didn't know if it was the best choice to make.

    The gray apprentice stood up, ready to go back to camp. He glanced at the sky for a moment. Sunhigh. That left plenty of time for an afternoon nap, as long as his mentor didn't come to get him for training. "Bye, Riverpaw," he meowed quietly before disappearing into the forest.

Orange Peel

   Riverpaw felt a feeling or relief flood through him when Kestrelpaw said that he would keep it a secret that he was sick. There was some hesitation at the beginning, as if he were thinking about it. Riverpaw didn't know him all too much so, he didn't know if he would actually keep the secret. But there was nothing he could do about that. Riverpaw would have to hope that Kestrelpaw was trustworthy enough. When the gray tom left, Riverpaw let out a goodbye before watching him slink off into the forest.

   He looked forward, watching him until he could no longer hear the crunching of dead leaves left behind from leaf fall. He let out a sigh and eventually looked towards the direction that Riverpaw wanted to go towards. A thought occurred to him that maybe Elli would be at the usual spot where they met, but he pushed the thought aside. There was no way he could go over there, not with him feeling like this. Maybe when he was better. He sighed and began to walk back to the camp, wishing that he could get over this mouse-brained cold soon. He would have to pretend that he was well again, but that was the price he was willing to pay. He had to look strong, being sick was no exception.
