Sloth for Aspenstar, Demonic for Coconut
As Froststar took to the temporary leader post, she watched as eager, interested cats gathered around. Where she stood was inferior to the lookout rock at home, but she would make due for her clan. Today she was finally fulfilling a duty she had long since avoided. It seemed below her to be giving attention to others, yet the mutters and whispers as cat’s gathered to see what their leader had to say made it worth it. Everycat was on edge; the clan borders were pressed up too tightly against one another and small coughs made everyone fear the worse. Perusual, Froststar was fine. She thrived through the chill of frost upon her whiskers, and the thrill that everything was so close to breaking kept her alive.
Lately something crawled in her stomach; she was hungry, and it wasn't the lack of prey. For Froststar always got her fill. No, she wanted attention so badly that she'd descend to the level of announcer to get it. Her drama from Breezepaw’s appointment was slowly starting to die down. Cats no longer whispered about how a crippled cat was chosen to be leader. There was something else that had everyone’s attention. Tensions were rising between Cinderstar and Aspenstar. Froststar loved it for what it was, but she was growing annoyed. For the first time in her life, she was on the sidelines. FireClan was falling apart, but somehow she wasn’t a side to take. It irked her beyond end. Froststar should have been in that. She should have been the one to stand up for the weak and fight against FireClan’s ideals. This belonged to her.
Yet here she was, wasting time by holding a ceremony. It would brighten up the clan. New warriors to fight and new apprentices to believe in. But as she called out similar words in a sing song tone, her mouth felt dry and course. “All of FireClan gather round, I have something to warm those chilled hearts of yours. We have some cats to name today!”
The snowy leader let her words settle on attentive ears and smirked as even more cat’s crowded around her. Even if today's events would be focused on the apprentices and kits, she could be the life of the party. These cats would be honored to have her name them, and she was going to make sure they knew it.
“To start!” She shouted to make sure everyone was quiet and paying complete attention. “There are some kits ready to become apprentices….” Pause for effect.
“Blizzardkit, you already look like a strong FireClanner and I’m sure your bravery will let you grow into a great warrior someday. I’ll have Yarrowfrost help you with that.” Froststar smiled as she intentionally claimed all the credit for choosing mentors. Yarrowfrost seemed like a perfect cat by Froststar’s standards and she made a note to get to know the pretty she-cat at a later date.
“Hawk-kit, dear. You may be quiet, but your smarts will someday aid FireClan more than you know. I name Oakflame as your mentor.” As she made each announcement, Froststar decided to spice it up. She let words flow freely with little concern for rituals or proper sayings. FireClan had a way to do things, but she wanted to make this a special occasion. Froststar was going to make these new (and impressionable) apprentices feel like her words were hand picked for them alone.
“Stormkit, your dedication and energy are great. I hope to see how Sunflame can help you grow.”
“Hickorykit, you have already shown bravery and loyalty. May you grow even more in your path to warrior hood. Cherryfang will be your mentor.”
“Dapplekit, I hope to see you put your energy and eagerness to good use. I’ll have, Sunheart be your mentor.”
“Cinderkit, you are curious and loyal. I hope to see you use your talents under the guidance of Crowheart.” She said and watched said she-cat bristle with anger. Crowheart was an interesting cat. She followed Cinderstar around like a pup, and an apprentice would be a good distraction for her.
“May Starclan guide all of your paws as you new apprentices find your place in FireClan.” Froststar threw in the ritualistic line for good measure and smiled innocently.
“Mousepaw, Lionstorm has informed us that you’re ready to become a warrior. I call upon StarClan to shine upon you and name you a full warrior of FireClan. From now on, you will be known as Mousewhisper in honor of your unbreakable loyalty and hope.”
“Foxpaw, Applestep has informed us that you’re also ready to become a warrior. I call upon StarClan to shine upon you and name you a full warrior of FireClan. From now on, you will be known as Foxtooth for your bravery and fighting skill.”
Perhaps naming Mousewhisper and Foxtooth normally would be considered a defeat. But she was growing impatient. There was one thing everyone wanted to know, and that was something Froststar had the pleasure of saying. Coconut, the kittypet had daringly entered FireClan. Most would see it as a foolish thing, but Froststar knew there was something to that pretty face. Something that could worm her way into hearts and feast. So with the moment finally upon her, Froststar took a deep breath. She had been craving this.
“And lastly, I'm sure you all have been wondering what would happen with our new friend Coconut-" Froststar froze. Which was weird since she never froze. Cats froze in response to her: their minds broken by the impossible beauty the leader had. It was unlike her to cut off so abruptly, but she couldn't focus on anything else. Her eyes drank the sight of a grey cat stepping forward, and a fire lit in her cold and empty chest. She smiled, “Cinderstar? Whatever is the matter?”
Her fellow leader’s body was tight with muscles that FireClanners admired. She was buff and rough and stepped through the crowd with a goal in mind. Even now, her followers were getting ready to pounce. They watched as their goddess stepped into the ring. Giggling, Froststar considered what would happen next. Cinderstar wanted to dance, and Froststar was ready to tango.
