The Boy Prophet - RavenClan Plot Thread

Deerpaw was looking at Sootpaw with admiration and encouragement, whenever he looked her way she’d nod at him as though telling him he was doing great. She hissed when Ripplestep spoke wishing that her leg was in tip top condition so she could just go at him and swipe his ears. Still, she was attentive at Sootpaw’s voice wishing him the best of luck and all the courage she had to offer. When he spoke of Petalflight’s disappearance she was hardly surprised, spending most of her time in the medicine den she had suspected that much. Still, both her recovery and Creekpaw’s was proof that Sootpaw had talent as a medicine cat, her recovery wouldn’t have been as smooth without him by her side.

When Creekpaw began chanting Sootpaw’s name Deerpaw presses herself closer to her friend telling her to calm down lest she harm her throat. “He’ll be a great medicine cat,” she said to her friend smiling a little to herself though the smile was quickly erased when her clanmates started to voice their doubts. It made sense but she wished they had a little more faith in Sootpaw and in themselves. “RavenClan values independence,” she spoke loud and clear, looking at her clanmates and at their medicine cat “surely we can hold the camp until Sootpaw returns.”

Eyes narrowing, Ripplestep took note as the young cat reacted to his provocations, though he nodded and allowed Sootpaw to continue in silence,  too curious to play with the young tom any further and delay the news he saw fit to deliver.

Petalflight having disappeared was certainly not news to him, but Sootpaw himself being unaware of the reasoning as to why certainly was. Did this mean their medicine cat abandoned them? Had she become aware of more calamities set to befall RavenClan? Fear prickled under his skin, and his ears flattened back against his head. We're doomed! Our lives depend on one measly half-trained apprentice! He struggled to think through the panicked thoughts as Sootpaw began pacing on the boulder, continuing his speech.

StarClan knows, he would have been better off not knowing what was to come from the apprentice's mouth. He'd confided their weakness first in FireClan before even his own Clan? They'd been fighting at the borders for moons! His claws unsheathed, digging into the ground as Creekpaw started up a chant, still reeling from the information Sootpaw had dumped on them.

Another warrior spoke then, raising a valid concern, followed shortly by an apprentice. He was anxious to hear Sootpaw's response to the questions when Deerpaw spoke up. He rounded on her, fear and anger mixing thoroughly in his voice and body language. "FireClan will see this as the perfect time to attack! Without our medicine cat we are doomed and he has given our enemies the opening they need!" Turning back to Sootpaw, he added his own question to the fray. "Have FireClan given their word under StarClan that they will not take advantage of this? Did you even think to ask?"

    Waiting patiently for the chatter to die down, Sootpaw flicked his tail for quiet. Deerflight had posed a logical question, and while he appreciated the support of Creekpaw and Deerpaw, he was reluctant to leave him in the dark; cats like the tabby tom were a valuable asset to the Clan, and there was no reason to ignore them.

    “You’re right to wonder, Deerflight, but like Deerpaw said: RavenClan is independent. I am no more your leader than any cat here. I trust that each and every one of you will be able to cope in my absence, and so I will not consider naming or recommending an advisor to take over while I’m gone. I hope that answer is sufficient.” Bowing his head to the older warrior, Sootpaw turned his gaze away from the tabby tom, casting it again over the congregation of cats—his Clanmates and hopefully loyal friends. In the moons to come, he would have to gather strength from them just as they would have to from him, and he prayed they shared Deerpaw’s opinions on his capabilities as a healer.

    But among the crowd, there was one cat who did not seem pleased by Sootpaw’s statement, and he was not surprised when again Ripplestep raised his voice. His voice was riddled with unease, and even from where Sootpaw sat on his boulder he could detect the undeniable stench of fear on the tom’s pelt.

    It wasn’t until he posed his question that Sootpaw thought to even acknowledge him—he’d already decided the tom was hardly worth his time, but seeing his words were valid, he listened. "Have FireClan given their word under StarClan that they will not take advantage of this? Did you even think to ask?"

    A good question, especially considering its source.

    “I have not yet spoken with the leaders of FireClan, but I do not doubt that Fernheart has already brought our circumstances to their attention. That being said, I doubt even they would stoop so low as to attack a medicine cat. It is a crime that would not go unpunished, and with the drought affecting us all, it’s a risk they’d be reluctant to make, I'm sure.”

    The words were true enough, but there was a hint of doubt in every sentence he spoke. While Sootpaw didn’t doubt Fernheart and considered her trustworthy, he could not say the same for the three other leaders. FireClan was a proud bunch, and it was not uncommon for them to act out of pride alone—perhaps the idea of helping an enemy Clan would wound their delicate egos. But should it come to that, Sootpaw did not doubt they’d be prepared.

    RavenClan had better access to water than FireClan, and while it meant a long trek through WillowClan territory, they were coping. The same could not be said for their neighbors.

    Content with his response, he eagerly changed the subject. Now that Petalflight’s absence had been addressed, there was the matter of the naming ceremonies, which were long overdue. It would be his responsibility to do what his mentor was no longer able, and considering he had the bulk of the Clan gathered beneath him, he saw no reason to delay the ceremonies any further. Besides, it would help to lift the tension—something that seemed necessary when he considered his Clanmates reactions.

    “I hope I have gotten to everyone’s questions, and if not, feel free to approach me after the meeting. For now, though, let us turn out attention away from Petalflight’s absence,” Sootpaw began steadily, sitting up a little bit taller and puffing his chest. Unlike before, this had been the one thing he’d looked forward to doing today. “Cats of RavenClan I am honored to announce to you that despite the drought, we are thriving. Without a doubt in my mind, I know that StarClan is watching over us, and it is because of that that we have so many who are ready to receive their apprentice and warrior names.”

    He cast his gaze over the crowd and beckoned Creekpaw and Deerpaw forward. Nights had been spent thinking of the appropriate name for his two friends, and now that he’d finally settled on one, he was eager to see their reactions.     “Creekpaw”—his gaze shifted to the battle-scarred she-cat—“From this moment on you will be known as Creektail. StarClan honors your perseverance and bravery in the face of adversity, and we welcome you as an honorary warrior of RavenClan.”

    “Deerpaw, come forward.” He motioned for her to draw nearer. “From this moment on you will be known as Deerstep. StarClan honors your grace and gentle spirit, and we welcome you also as an honorary warrior of RavenClan.”

    “And last, but certainly not least, Tulip. This kittypet met Petalflight some moons ago, and I am honored to welcome a friend of my mentor into RavenClan, not as a kittypet, but as a warrior of RavenClan. From this moment on you will be known as Flowerdapple, for your namesake and dappled pelt. StarClan honors your courage, and we welcome you now as a warrior of RavenClan.”

    That should be all of the warriors… Now for the new apprentices. “Owlkit, Streamkit, Dustkit—gather here beneath me for your apprentice names.”

    He leaped down from his perch to confront them, dropping his gaze first on Owlkit. When Petalflight had entrusted him with his apprentice name, he’d felt as if he’d burst with pride; he hoped that his delivery would be good enough to instill the same feelings into each of them. “Owlkit, you are kind and caring. You will learn the ways of a warrior under the guidance of Graystorm. I hereby name you Owlpaw until you receive your warrior name. May StarClan light your path.”

    Next, Streamkit. “Streamkit, you are patient and observant. I hope you can learn all that you need to know under the guidance of Blackadder. I hereby name you Streampaw until you receive your warrior name. May StarClan light your path.”

    And lastly, Dustkit. He’d played with her on one occasion, and to give her her apprentice name was an honor he’d never thought to have. “Dustkit, you are adaptable and decisive. I hope you can learn all that you need to from Badgermask. I hereby name you Dustpaw until you receive your warrior name. May StarClan light your path.”

    Once all the cats had been named, Sootpaw rose his voice to chant their new names. It was a Clan tradition, and he remembered fondly the feeling of exhilaration he’d felt when they’d called his very own name. It was, after all, a celebration, and he wanted each and every one of them to revel in the moment. May StarClan guide your paws, friends. There is so much for us all to learn.

Stonepaw listened intently to the explanation. Although he was still a little bit apprehensive of the situation, he knew felt a little bit better. Maybe things would work out. Sootpaw will be a good medicine cat. Taking in a deep breath he intently watched as Creekpaw, Deerpaw, and Tulip became warriors and Dustkit, Streamkit, and Owlkit became apprentices. He smiled. Yeah, everything was going to be just fine. D-Deerstep, Creektail, Flowerdapple, D-Dustpaw, Streampaw, Owlpaw," he said out loud with the chorus. He noticed a kit walking away from the meeting place but ignored her, assuming that she was going to the nursery or something. Nothing would go wrong. Right? He brushed the thought away as excitement coursed through him when he realized that he would soon be a warrior. It wouldn't be long now.

He listened with a sullen yet light expression, ears pricked, as Sootpaw settled his doubts. He did, however, register Ripplestep's distaste with slight amusement; it was perfectly right to worry at times like this. He just dearly hoped some cat would act peacekeeper in Sootpaw's absence - as much as Ravenclan valued independence, they would have no advisor for what seemed like moons. This still played on his mind, but when Sootpaw finished his explanation, he dipped his head. He was satisfied, for the most part, with that.

Then came the ceremonies. A fair number of them. Once they were over, Deerflight drew himself up, and chanted with that booming voice, one of the loudest voices in the group.
And once the chants died down, he looked knowingly at the she-cat who had chanted for Sootpaw, and raised himself up again, to chant for their medicine cat.
"Sootpaw! Sootpaw!"

C rowgaze nestled in the far back, many of the cats crowding around the beloved Sootpaw as he went forward with his announcements on Petalflight's disappearance. If any cat actually paid attention to these things, we might of had this whole ordeal sorted by now. The bickering, chattering, chanting. Pretty distracting really. Having to weave through the deafening noise to actually listen to this young toms words. But Crowgaze had to admit, he did side with Ripplestep's questioning antics. A valid point. FireClan had the upper-hand in this case. This opening was a wholesome potential on its own. But it appeared the decision had been made. Sootpaws reply to the crowds questions were efficient; from general face value. Until he stated of the leaders possibly not fully aware. Even if Fernheart had spoken with them.. There are three leaders. What are the chances they'd all agree on given terms? They are not very fond of outsiders, from what he's seen in person; they're too proud for their own good. Sootpaw better be right on this. "Very well," The dark furred warrior sighed and licked his chest. Gathered on his paws he edged closer at the start of naming ceremonies. Apprentice by apprentice they called upon. He joined in with the chanting of new names. Glad to see the clan thriving, he was more intent on a particular name. Dappleflower. The yowls of new names died down, silence overtook the crowd if only for a second.     Foxflight listened and watched carefully as the whole scene went down. Petalflight, missing? The tom thought to himself. He noticed that she wasn't around as much, but it never occured to him that she would've been gone. Not to mention that indeed, no one thought to notice or say anything. It was a good thing no one was getting severely injured, otherwise they'd be in trouble. As Sootpaw continued speaking, he could hear his Clanmates chime up and give their various opinions.

     As usual, the red and white tom decided that he would stay out of that, even though he did form an opinion himself, he was much too laidback to try and argue with somebody over it. He had his concerns, but the Clan had done fine without Petalflight before they noticed her disapperance. So now, it made no difference. Only, Sootpaw was being trained by another Clan. Still concerning, but he had faith that the right decision was made.

    Tulip was unsure of what to make of this whole situation. She had barely been in this forest, and already so much was going on. Not wanting to get caught up in the other cat's affairs, and still cautious of getting to know them, the tortoiseshell sat herself in the back with the one cat she did know; Crowgaze. The black tom had luckily found her, and let her come to this camp so that she could live her life with all of these other wild cats. Although she was still confused, and somewhat afraid of life this way, she was willing to give it a try. Especially considering how nice some of these cats were. Most importantly, they were free to do whatever they liked. She never realized she could do that before.

    Then, she heard her name come from the grey cat on the rock. Sootpaw, if she could recall. Kittypet, she heard. Many times Tulip heard that word being used to describe her. She wasn't sure what it meant, but she assumed it had something to do with her past life. Shrugging that thought aside, she continued listening to the tom speaking. Flowerdapple. She thought to herself. This was her new name. It meant a new life. 

    Flowerdapple dipped her head gingerly to Sootpaw. "Thank you," she said quietly, before turning to Crowgaze and smiling. "I guess I'm here to stay."
